Shih Tzu Dog Haircuts
When you bring your Shih Tzu home for the first time, you may want to experiment with various Shih Tzu dog haircuts to find one that looks good on your new pet. You don’t need to spend a fortune on this undertaking as there are many great do-it-yourself guides available that will not only teach you how to trim your Shih Tzu’s nails but also give you helpful tips for styling your dog. You will need to be careful when trimming the nails of your dog because too many nicks can cause skin irritation and possible infection. However, if you follow these steps you will be able to get a stylish look on your dog without worrying about having to pay for expensive vet bills.
First you will want to start with finding a good set of clippers that are comfortable for your dog. You can use human grade clippers or try the electric clippers that cost less than $30. You will need to trim the hair on your dog’s paws before you start cutting the rest of the hair. The part of the foot that covers the toes needs to be trimmed first so that you can see what you are doing. Once you have trimmed the paws you can move onto the other parts of your dog’s body.
Next you will want to choose a good shampoo for your dog. There is a huge difference between a human brand and dog shampoo. Human shampoo will leave a residue on your dog’s coat that can irritate his skin. Your Shih Tzu’s fur is not sensitive, so do not use human shampoo. Also, when shampooing your dog, use the same care you would you yourself. Be sure to rinse your dog off well after the shampoo.
Now it is time to trim the rest of the hair. If you only have short hair trimming will be easier. If you have long hair then you will want to use a trimming scissors. A Shih Tzu’s hair grows very fast, so once you start to cut it you will want to do it often to keep your dog looking his or her best.
There are several ways you can cut your dog’s fur. You can use scissors to cut the hair, use a mouser to shape the hair, or use a pair of good quality scissors. You should only use one of these methods, preferably the first method. The reason is because there are different ways you can hurt your dog if you try to cut it in the wrong way. If you don’t cut it the right way it could kick your dog or make a big ugly cut behind his ears.
You will first want to start by trimming the hair on the side nearest to the dog’s back. This will be the shortest section. Once you have cut this out you will move to the next area on the side of the body and do the exact same thing. After you have done this but the rest of the hair away from the back and side of the face. Remember not to cut too far past the dog’s tail.
Now we are going to move on to the top of the head. You want to use a comb to take out as much of the hair on the top of the head as possible. Keep in mind that this area is going to take a lot of extra hair to trim. You should probably also get a dog treat so your dog will want to look at it. Be careful when doing this part because some dogs may have sensitive skin and they could get an upset stomach from cutting into too much hair.
When you have finished, rinse the dog with a bowl of water to get the hair wet and the shampoo out. You will then want to trim any longer hairs that you might find. This can be done in one of two ways. You can cut the hair away in a side to side motion or you can cut the hair up into little pieces.
